I was asked to contribute to a special issue of a Cambridge journal about the 1950s. I thought I knew nothing about the period until I recalled that what I lacked was 'book learning' about it and knew rather a lot. So I wrote this, the first autobiographical essay I attempted. There is some overlap of examples with 'Homage to HMY', but I don't want to disrupt either.
